It all began when the king saw that Sweden needed defense
And on a summer day in June in 1544
Vaxholm's fortress was built on this spot
That was how it all began
King Gustav Vasa didn't live long enough to see the construction of the fortress completed

Saw to that it was done
The city became a royal settlement in 1647
